Wow.  2013 came and went, and what do I have to show for it?  From both a personal and business perspective, 2013 was a year for the books.  I relaunched my business with an all new outlook.  I made my business completely online, which has allowed me to continue working seamlessly from countries all around the world (Hola desde Spain!).  I’ve made friends and business contacts from California to Cataluna.  I moved my home from the big city to a small beach town to be closer to my family.  All in all, 2013 was my best year yet.

As I continue to learn and grow with my business, there are quite a few tricks I’ve picked up along the way, which is why I created my newsletter.  Today, I’m going to share with you the big change I made to my business that allowed me to triple my incoming leads in the past 60 days.

Plan, Hire, Delegate.

For as long as I’ve had my business (about 3 1/2 years), I’ve always done everything myself.  I wanted every aspect of my business to have my personal touch, and this ended up hurting me in the long run.  The most important business decision I made in 2013 was to hire a few stellar employees.  60 days ago, my team consisted of a graphic designer and a website designer -both rarely contracted – and myself.

It was my “Oh S%#*!” moment. Sink or swim.  I didn’t think I had the funds to hire anyone, let alone anyone actually talented and creative.  But, I knew I had too much work and too few hours (and not nearly enough energy) to keep doing everything myself.

So, I started slow.  I hired a virtual assistant on Elance.com to take care of all of my administrative tasks, from invoicing to research to creating Powerpoint presentations…Even booking my business travel arrangements.

Next, I hired a part-time copy writer to write blog posts.  This was very important because finding a proper writer who can capture your voice is very difficult.  I posted an ad on Craigslist, and through some trial and error, I finally found the perfect match.

Then came time for me to face my real fear: hiring a bookkeeper.  The very reason I needed a bookkeeper was the reason I hadn’t hired one yet.  I didn’t know what I needed or what I could hand off to someone else.  Here’s what I found out: Have them do everything.  The relief I found from having a professional take over my business finances was instant.

So how did these hires result in the tripling of incoming leads for my business?

The answer is simple.  These seemingly mundane tasks were taking up so much of my time, I couldn’t focus on what I do best: Marketing my own business.  Once my hands (and brain power) were freed of these tasks, I could double the amount of time I put into marketing.  The funny thing about marketing is that even if you only double your time spent doing it, you often triple (or quadruple) the effects, which is precisely what happened the last couple months.

Ask yourself, what can you delegate at a low cost to free yourself up for a bigger and brighter future for your business?
